Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings Recipe

These are a wonderful dessert optionfor the fall and winter. I enjoy making them during the holiday season when I crave pie but don’t want to spend that much time in the kitchen.

All you need is pie filling and a pack of refrigerated crescent rolls to make this easy recipe!

Are Pillsbury crescent rolls the same as croissants?

Crescent rolls and croissants are similar. Generally, croissants have more flaky layers because they’re made from puff pastry dough. Crescent rolls have some flakiness to them as well, but not as much. They usually have fewer layers.

How to make apple turnover with crescent rolls?

You can make crescent roll apple turnovers with this recipe! They will look slightly different that your typical turnovers — not that traditional triangle shape, but pack the same flavor!

What can I substitute for Apple Pie Spice?

If you want to use apple pie spice in this recipe, substitute it for cinnamon. You can also add more flavor by using more than cinnamon and making your own spice mixture.

Mix 1 tablespoon of cinnamon together with 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg and 1 teaspoon of allspice to create a mix similar to apple pie spice. Then use this mixture instead of cinnamon in the recipe.

If you’re using canned apple pie filling, it also has some spices in it already so watch how much spice you mix in!

Which apples are best for turnovers?

If you are making your own apple pie filling from scratch, Granny Smith apples and Golden Delicious apples work well.

If you like a sweeter apple, I also recommend Honeycrisp apples.

These apples generally hold together well through the baking process. However, this recipe uses canned apple pie filling to make it easier.
